Santa Bárbara beach is better known as “Areais”. It is the classic surf spot of São Miguel and the Azores. A beach with black sand and various left and right-handed peaks. Beware the rips when it is big. Site of the Azores Surfers and Bodyboarders Union and the venue for the Azores Pro WQS. Can get very crowded in summer.
